Island in the Sky

Holiday season is supposed to be fun and relaxed for many people, but may not for guys with seasonal businesses.  Tax preparers and retailers are alike in this category.  While Christmas is the peak for the retailers, it is a cranking-up time for the tax professionals, and planning appointments are jamming up the holiday schedules.

Tax Works vs. Farming

Tax preparers are also like farmers in the sense that we harvest during only certain time of the year.  Both are hard laboring jobs – we plow the fields all year long and count on the unexpected nature of weather or IRS alike.

I think farming is even a better career choice because of the government subsidy and mass-producing technologies.  Tax work is no commodity, and each product has to be custom-made.  The work demands proper research and attention to details to satisfy each client’s unique circumstance and avoid potential adversities.  IRS now has more sticks and starts squeezing the other end – the tax preparers – as one of their enforcement strategies.

Mood Fluctuation

Yes, I felt victim to the mood fluctuation.  No I am not a women.  It must be from over-working.  So I decided to take a break and indulge myself a little bit.  Island in the Sky is the movie I picked to cure the bluish mood.  Does not help a great deal, but this 1953 classic is definitely chicken soup for the soul.

Good Character

Don’t know when it started, I acquired the taste of older and boring movies – it is called classics – duh. Hmm, this is a sign of aging I am afraid. I still get the excitement from movies packed with special effects, the kind that gives you 5-minute thrill. Ok, may be 10 minutes, if my favorite actors are in it. I read a quote from James Spader that good character is important to a good story and good character shows weakness and strength just like us.

John Wayne
John Wayne

Many classics have John Wayne in it because he has a way to build such good characters.  In Island in the Sky, he does not come across as muscular as in his other western movies.  I think those self-dialogues are not necessary the brand of John Wayne.  However, the contrast help showing the weakness in a man. That also amplifies or proves his mental toughness, which helps them survive the harsh condition in the subarctic no man’s land after their airplane crash-landed. (By the way that was a real story)

Movie such as this really gives people inspiration and a deeper reach in the  soul.   For solo business peoples, independent workers, or free agents, we may not have big company year-end parties of celebration, but a nice classical movie could be just all the comfort that we need.
